It’s been difficult to avoid Janelle Monáe at the moment and the hype has been epic, but her album The ArchAndroid (released last Friday) is living up to the gushing declarations by music critics. Its  a riot of infectious funk,  futuristic pop, 60’s girl band strains and crazy soul but most refreshingly, it manages to sound hugely original. The last year couple of years have been trumpeted internationally as an era dominated by female musicians (La Roux, Lone Lady, Laura Marling, Ellie Goulding); Kelis and MIA are back with new albums and it’s hard to stand out in sea of GaGas and Florences, but this 24-year-old manages just that.
