I can’t remember which red carpet she was walking down, but recently I saw a photo of Michelle Williams and thought (after the usual “man, I can’t believe the girl who played Jen Linley on Dawson’s Creek turned into such a good and credible actress), “Wow, she always seems to wear really great clothes”.

Oh Sofia, your films are vacant self-indulgent hipster bollocks, but your clothes are awfully pretty...
And I realised she had joined the select group of Famous Women Whose Wardrobes I Covet. Yes, there are many appallingly dressed celebs (thank goodness), but there are few who tend to step out in the sort of clothes I would instantly snap up myself if I were much, much richer (and a little bit taller).
This wardrobe-love has nothing to do with the women themselves – while the aforementioned Ms Williams seems like a talented, smart, likeable woman, and I love Charlotte Gainsbourg’s music as much as I adore her effortlessly cool style, I find almost all of Sofia Coppola’s films incredibly irritating, and she comes across like a boring whiny brat in interviews. Yet I think she’s beautiful and it is she whose wardobe I covet most of all. She always looks amazing. It’s not fair, really.
Sadly, in reality I am smaller, scruffier, and infinitely less stylish than all of these people. But I bet if someone gave me an unlimited supply of Marc Jacobs I could at least give it a try. So what famous wardrobes do you covet?
I had a message from someone I’ve never met but whose life intersects with mine.
“I suspect you have the wardrobe I would most covet,” said she.
While being utterly delighted, I looked at my smelly Birkenstocks, holey house jumper and Mickey Mouse hat and laughed aloud.
I’d imagine Michelle W has birkies in her cupboard. I’d bet even Dita Von Teese does.
My choice? Helena Bonham-Carter! So crazy, so stylish, so eye-catching yet strangely comfortable-looking. Yet on me — taller, wider, broader of feature, lumpier of ass — I know her look would morph into Raggedy-Ann.
Helena’s birkies would have purple jewels on them, and feathers…
And Carey Mulligan is doing some cute clothing-stuff too.
Heh, who doesn’t have a pair of Birkis stashed away somewhere? As long as they’re not worn with socks (outside, anyway – I was wearing mine around the house with hand-knit wooly socks yesterday evening. Pretty sure Sofia doesn’t do that).
And I’m with you on Carey Mulligan, she wears lovely clothes. I interviewed her a few years ago and she was incredibly chic.
I’d never noticed Michelle Williams until she popped on the red carpet in that citrine yellow dress. It was the moment that I convinced myself I could wear the shade. I hated the daisy dress she showed up with recently, though.
Cate Blanchett always looks perfect on the carpet, but I don’t see many pics of her everyday style. Julianne Moore always wears great clothes, even if I find her connection with creepy Tom Ford regrettable. Zoe Saldana & Anne Hathaway wear beautiful emsembles. For a while Eva Mendes struggled to find the right style, but now, in vintage looking reproductions, she looks like a contemporary Rita Hayworth at premieres.
Yes, Eva Mendes almost always looks stunning in her vintage-esque garb – don’t think I could get away with her frocks, though! Sofia’s attire, on the other hand…
I would choose Carey Mulligan too– or Diane Kruger or Blake Lively… all of that Chanel..
The wardrobe of any starlet styled by Rachel Zoe. Maybe it’s un-PC to like Zoe’s work, but I think she’s massively talented.
Also Vanessa Paradis, Kerry Washington, Zoe Saldana, Diane Kruger…
Also Betty Draper. Does she count?!
I crave Betty’s dresses too, so I think we should count her in! Zoe’s style tends to be a bit flowy for me…
Whose wardrobe do I covet? It’s gotta be Imelda May
She always looks brilliant – and you know it’s put together by her, not a stylist. In fact, I generally love people who’ve created a signature look, even when it’s not to my taste.
Yes, love Imelda May’s wardrobe too, I’m a vintage gal! And I adore Dannii Minogue’s wardrobe, what a classy chick!
I’m treating my flu with liberal doses of pre-code and late 30s films, so right now I’m pointlessly lusting after the wardrobes of women like Myrna Loy..
I heartily second Coppola’s as A Wardobe I’d Like To Pilfer!
Oh, I love ’30s clothes. I got married in a ’30s evening dress that I got in a vintage shop in London run by a crazy posh woman in plus fours.
I would definitely raid Carey Mulligan’s and Emma Watson’s wardrobe, and while I’m at it, I’d get the names of their hairdressers.
While Emma from Glee might be a fictional character, I would steal every single thing from her closet, especially her dresses and jewellery.
Its a recession – so primark it is, jealous anyone? I’ll bet Emma Watson would think my wardrobe is cruelty to women!!!!!
