Okay, so this is frivolous, but seriously, following on from my last post about how I was going to get myself out of my rut and glam up, it’s proving more difficult than I thought. Mainly due to the weather. I spent much of my adolescence in mid-west America and the months of November through April were style-free due to the freezing cold weather. Is this how things are going to be in Ireland from now on? Frizzy hair, sopping umbrellas, coats and hats all cramping one’s style? Pah! Even with the best of intentions, I’m finding it hard to maintain my glam new self in this weather and unfortunately, floral wellies just don’t do it for me. Maybe thigh-high boots are a new sartorial option for wet weather?

I’ve always thought our climate is impossible to dress for and, bizarrely, we Irish just don’t seem to ‘do’ raingear all that much. Penney’s are helping that with their fab range of funky raincoats but generally it is HARD to be dry, comfy and stylish all at the same time. (My 14 year old son bawled at me, ‘What’s with the noise of that coat? It’s driving me mad!’ while I was driving him somewhere. Raincoats squeak – which is distracting and irritating.)
Add to that wet legs in skirts, or sopping trouser hems, and it all becomes easier to wear ugly shoes and clothes that are somewhat weatherproof.
i’m a big fan of skirts and knee-high boots for this crap weather. it keeps my feet dry and avoids that horrible look and feel of wet pants. i wear a long leather coat (keeps me dry and it’s not warm) and the brolly is really just to keep the hair nice and straight. i carry product with me so i can tame the frizz on the go.
yes, it’s hard work… but to me it’s worth it. if i think i look good, i feel good too.
I rant about this subject pretty much every day at the moment! I think the big problem is finding clothes that are waterproof but not too hot, because the weather has been both wet and horribly muggy and heavy. At least in winter you can wear snug boots and tights and nice wool coats, but now we need the protectiveness of winter garb and the coolness of summer stuff (or at least spring). I’ve gone for boots and a denim skirt a few times in recent weeks, but most of my summery skirts and frocks just look silly with black leather knee-boots. And WRW, I was admiring a friend’s cool floral Pennys raincoat on Saturday night but apparently those coats have sold out all over the city!
Don’t even get me started about my hair, which is currently just a giant frizz despite the best efforts of Bumble and Bumble’s magic defrizzing potion (which is wonderful in winter, despite the general damp, but seems unable to cope with the effects of summer humidity).
I’m glad I got my Penney’s raincoat early so! I don’t know if they even made it as far as Galway (a lot of the best stuff doesn’t) but I snapped mine up in Penney’s in Cork in June. €25. Who’d be dirty?! (Or wet, for that matter…)
I think skirts and boots is now the way forward. Today I’m experimenting with knee-high boots and skinny jeans tucked in. Ta-da!
.
WRW – so funny about your son
Tatoca, agreed – if I look good, I feel good too.
Penny, feeling the frizz frustration. I’ve been wearing a hat and umbrella everywhere this past week.
Oh, my leopard-print Penney’s mac that I bought two years ago has been keeping me dry this last week too.
I have a totally rational loathing of umbrellas so I am always either soggy and rain soaked or fuzzy from drying off. But it’s worth it – I just can’t stand umbrella – lethal little weapons of eye destruction!
Knee high boots and a skirt are the easiest way to look half fashionable as you plod through the puddles and it’s just dawned on my I don’t have a matching set in my wardrobe. Hmm….
Fck fashion ladies, I’m so piss*d with this goshdarn weather I find a large binliner with no holes is the only thing that conveys my absolute disgust of farcical summer.
iVive le Sac Noir!
Le Sac Noir may well turn into the must have item of A/W 08 :/
I had waited until I was back in Ireland to have my haircut as I was sick and tired of my Italian haircut traumas. Of course the weather was drizzly when I had it done but I couldn’t resist asking the hairdresser to dry it straight. She assured me she had a humidity defence hair spray. But ’twas no good. Within five minutes of being outdoors my perfectly straighten hair was a frizzy mess. I felt so cheated. I just went curly and low maintenance for the rest of my stay in Dublin- which was time-saving but not very much fun
